“In all things of nature, there is something of the marvelous.” – Aristotle
When was the last time you truly slowed down and connected with the world around you? More than just glancing at a flower or admiring a towering tree—did you notice the bee collecting nectar, or wonder about the tree’s age and the stories it could tell?
In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, many of us spend more time behind screens than in nature. This disconnection has led to increased stress, anxiety, and a decline in overall well-being. Forest bathing, also known as forest therapy, offers a powerful way to reset, relax, and improve mental and physical health by immersing yourself in nature.
What is Forest Bathing?
Originating from the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, forest bathing is a mindful, sensory experience in nature. Developed in the 1980s, it was Japan’s response to rising health issues caused by urbanization and an increasingly tech-centric lifestyle. Research soon confirmed its incredible benefits, proving that simply spending time in the forest can significantly boost overall wellness.
Benefits of Forest Therapy
Scientific studies have shown that forest bathing can:
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Lower blood pressure
- Boost immunity
- Decrease inflammation
- Improve mental clarity and focus
- Enhance sleep quality
- Activate the parasympathetic nervous system (responsible for relaxation and recovery)
Additionally, trees release phytoncides—natural compounds that increase the body’s natural killer cells, which help fight infections and even enhance anti-cancer proteins.
A Personal Forest Bathing Experience
One of my most memorable forest bathing experiences took place at my favorite “sit spot” near Lewisville Lake. A sit spot is a quiet place where you remain still for 20 minutes or more, allowing nature to return to its natural rhythm around you.
On this particular day, I had hoped to see a heron. Instead, after about 10 minutes, I noticed turtles becoming active. A small turtle was attempting to climb onto a floating log where two others were already perched. As it struggled to balance, the log wobbled back and forth like a lumberjack log-rolling competition. Eventually, all three turtles tumbled into the water. Undeterred, the little turtle climbed back up and finally found balance. Watching this simple yet profound moment deepened my appreciation for the patience and perseverance found in nature.
What to Expect from a Forest Bathing Experience
Forest bathing isn’t about hiking, exercising, or reaching a scenic viewpoint—it’s about slowing down and engaging your senses. During a guided session, a certified forest therapy provider will lead you through gentle movement, breathwork, and mindfulness practices to help you connect deeply with nature. Invitations to use all five senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell—encourage a profound connection with the environment.
Each session concludes with a group reflection and a gratitude-filled tea ceremony, allowing participants to share their experiences and further cultivate a sense of presence and appreciation.
